TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, French post-impressionist artist (1864 - 1901) was infamous for dwelling at the Moulin Rouge and drinking incessantly. He advertised for the Moulin Rouge, to which he added his own humour by playing with composition. The flat dimensions and bold colours show an obvious Japonisme influence, catering to the fact that these images would be mass produced.

Reine de Joie, 1892

His experimental use of colour gives a glimpse into the debauchery of the world in which he lived. Toulouse Lautrec was not concerned with giving portraying The Moulin Rouge in a flattering, unrealistic light, proving while portraying an object accurately does not necessarily mean that it conveys it true to it's nature. The brush strokes are loose and painterly, adding to the sense of urgency and movement of both the painting and the creating of it.

Jane Avril Dancing, 1893

His use of  brown canvas and using it fill the unfilled spaces gives the paintings that he uses this style a in-the-moment feel them. I decided to try this by painting a picture of my cousin that I thought encapsulated her in a palette that is actually more suitable for her than her real complexion.

VINCENT VAN GOGH

Highly misunderstood Dutch post-impression artist (1853 - 1890) is renowned for his emotive and textural paintings. Van Gogh used a bold palette of colours applied the paint in a way that allows the viewer distinguish the various shades he mixed. Vincent van Gogh's artwork was not appreciated during lifetime and his career as an artist started later in life.
The way in which he uses paint to create an image in a way that no other medium can offer. He was not concerned with trying to create an image that looked exactly like life, instead he preferred to create a heighten reality, one with vivid colours and exaggerated shapes and forms. His urgency and desire to create is evident in his brushwork, which has a hurried feel evoked through their congruence. Much of his artwork had spiritual influence and his compositions did not always have a purely aesthetic purpose. He had a great ability to take an ordinary object, such as a shoe or a chair, and give them new life through his animated and lively paintings.

JOHN WILLIAM WATERHOUSE

British painter (1849 - 1917) is known for working in a Pre-Raphaelite style. His paintings have been present throughout my life and have always captured my imagination. He depicts women of Ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend. His return to a older style of painting adds to the whimsical feel and appropriately ages the painting. He knew how to tap into the contemporary fascination with the liminal and through his paintings. He managed to remind a nation of their roots, through the Arthurian legend paintings, in a time of uncertainty, at the turn of the century. His paintings are approachable and relatable, or at least would have been to a generation who was familiar with ancient stories and poems. Waterhouse has an evident understanding of the figure and his use of colour shows that he knows the importance of colour-relations. Through the whimsical and mystical atmosphere scenes set in fantasy lands, Waterhouse is inviting the viewer into a world where every day life cannot touch, them. They offer comfort in their familiarity but escapism in the other-worldly scenarios portrayed.
