Van Gogh used a bold palette of colours applied the paint in a way that allows the viewer distinguish the various shades he mixed. Vincent van Gogh's artwork was not appreciated during lifetime and his career as an artist started later in life.
The way in which he uses paint to create an image in a way that no other medium can offer. He was not concerned with trying to create an image that looked exactly like life, instead he preferred to create a heighten reality, one with vivid colours and exaggerated shapes and forms. His urgency and desire to create is evident in his brushwork, which has a hurried feel evoked through their congruence. Much of his artwork had spiritual influence and his compositions did not always have a purely aesthetic purpose. He had a great ability to take an ordinary object, such as a shoe or a chair, and give them new life through his animated and lively paintings.
